Just in the year since the Newtown school shooting, at least 173 children under age 12 have died from gunshots in the U.S., according to original reporting and research by NBC News.

As Americans we tend to feel a little comfortable reading a story of thousands of children kidnapped in China or some other country. The distance between the U.S. and China separates us from the reality that thousands of children are kidnapped right here at home in the United States. The Chinese story reads a thousand children, several as young as eight, have been kidnapped and sold to work as slaves. We are going to read the United States story. The problem of keeping our children safe encouraged Congress to act. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children was created by Congress in 1984. NCMEC assisted law enforcement with more than 148,160 missing child cases, resulting in the recovery of more than 132,300 children. NCMEC staff includes former, career law enforcement officers with experience at federal, state, and local levels, as well as forensics experts, technologists, analysts, attorneys, and social workers.

National Estimates of Missing Children

Key findings presented in the NISMART Bulletin National Estimates of Missing Children: An Overview include the following:

• The total number of children who were missing from their caretakers in 1999 (i.e., their caretakers did not know their whereabouts and were alarmed for at least an hour while trying to locate them) is estimated to be 1,315,600.
• Nearly all of the caretaker missing children (1,312,800 or 99.8 percent) were returned home alive or located by the time the study data were collected. Only a fraction of a percent (0.2 percent or 2,500) of all caretaker missing children had not returned home or been located, and the vast majority of these were runaways from institutions who had been identified in the survey of juvenile residential facilities.
• The number of missing children who were reported missing in 1999 (i.e., reported to the police or missing children’s agencies in order to locate them) was estimated to be 797,500, which is equivalent to a rate of 11.4 children per 1,000 in the U.S. population.
• Most of the caretaker missing children became missing because they ran away (48 percent) or because of benign misunderstandings or miscommunications about where they should be (28 percent).
• Children who were missing because they became lost or injured accounted for 15 percent of all caretaker missing children.
• Less than one-tenth (9 percent) of caretaker missing children were abducted by family members, and only 3 percent were abducted by nonfamily perpetrators.

Nonfamily Abducted Children

Key findings presented in the NISMART Bulletin Nonfamily Abducted Children: National Estimates and Characteristics include the following:

• During the study year, there were an estimated 115 stereotypical kidnappings, defined as abductions perpetrated by a stranger or slight acquaintance and involving a child who was transported 50 or more miles, detained overnight, held for ransom or with intent to keep the child permanently, or killed.
• In 40 percent of stereotypical kidnappings, the child was killed, and in another 4 percent, the child was not recovered.
• An estimated 58,200 children were victims of nonfamily abduction, defined more broadly to include all nonfamily perpetrators (friends and acquaintances as well as strangers) and crimes involving lesser amounts of forced movement or detention, in addition to the more serious crimes entailed in stereotypical kidnappings.
• Fifty-seven percent of children abducted by a nonfamily perpetrator were missing from caretakers for at least 1 hour, and 21 percent of the abducted children were reported to the police for help in locating the children.
• Teenagers were, by far, the most frequent victims of both stereotypical kidnappings and nonfamily abductions.
• Nearly half of all child victims of stereotypical kidnappings and nonfamily abductions were sexually assaulted by the perpetrator.

Children Abducted by Family Members

Key findings presented in the NISMART Bulletin Children Abducted by Family Members: National Estimates and Characteristics include the following:

• An estimated 203,900 children were victims of a family abduction in 1999. Among these, 117,200 were missing from their caretakers, and, of these, an estimated 56,500 were reported to authorities for assistance in locating the children.
• Forty-three percent of the family abducted children were not considered missing by their caretakers because the caretakers knew the children’s whereabouts or were not alarmed by the circumstances.
• Forty-four percent of family abducted children were younger than age 6.
• Fifty-three percent of family abducted children were abducted by their biological father, and 25 percent were abducted by their biological mother.
• Forty-six percent of family abducted children were gone less than a week, and 21 percent were gone 1 month or more. Six percent had not yet returned at the time of the survey interview.

National Incidence Studies

Approximately every ten years the US Department of Justice conducts a study of missing child cases in the United States. The latest, National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Thrownaway Children -- 2003 (NISMART-2), was published in October 2003. Before we continue, let’s take a closer look at the report title. We can understand the missing, abducted and runaway children better than the “thrownaway”. The number of U.S. youth projected to have experienced a runaway/thrownaway episode in 1999 is 1,682,900. An estimated 628,900, or 37 percent of those, were “caretaker missing” children. No more than an anticipated 357,600 youth, or 21 percent of all runaways/ thrownaways, were reported missing to police or to a missing children’s agency for reasons of finding them. Estimated on 17 indicators of damage or impending threat, 1,190,900 of the runaway/thrownaway youth (71 percent) were anticipated to be endangered.

According to NISMART-2 the information on endangered runaways/ thrownaways presents a picture of a huge quantity of youth afflicted from drug problems and physical or sexual abuse. Disturbing numbers of runaways/thrownaways are in the party of violent, sexually exploiting, or drug-abusing travel companion or suffer an actual or attempted assault while away from home. These children are unmistakably among the subgroups of runaways/thrownaways in utmost necessity of assistance—help that goes far beyond simply finding their location and sending them back to their homes. In actuality, for some youth, such as the physically and sexually abused, being sent back to their homes may enlarge rather than alleviate their danger. For this rationale, any law enforcement reply to runaway/thrownaway children should include a strong social service and mental health module that can attend to the child mistreatment, family conflict, substance abuse, and traumatic stress that precipitate and complicate these episodes. Runaways/thrownaways comprise the largest section of children reported missing to authorities. They make up almost half (45 percent) of all children reported missing and significantly minimize the children who are reported missing because of family or nonfamily abduction or who are lost or injured.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2002WWW.USDOJ.GOV Press Release: AMBER - America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response - was created in 1996 as a legacy to 9-year-old Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas and then brutally murdered. After this heinous crime, Dallas-Fort Worth broadcasters teamed with local police to develop an early warning system to help find abducted children.

Are Sex Offenders Living Near Your Children?

Sex offender is a broad label, with sexual predator often being used to describe a more severe physical or repeat sexual offense.  An individual may be labeled a "sexual predator" if their crime involves the internet in any way.  Each state in the United States defines the term "sex offender".  Several U.S. states place restrictions on where convicted sex offenders may live after their release.  They are prohibited from living within a designated distance of schools and daycare centers.  Sex Offender can live anywhere if they are using the Internet.

The Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website, coordinated by the U.S. Department of Justice, is a joint endeavor between the jurisdictional agencies hosting public sexual offender registries and the federal government.  The Website is a search tool permitting a user to submit a solitary national query to obtain information about sex offenders through a number of search options.

The conditions for searching are restricted to what each individual state may provide. The federal government does not provide the information.  The states provide the information. Therefore all results should be verified.  Searchers are warned to visit the corresponding state Websites for further information and/or guidance, as appropriate.

In the news September 2009 is the news that Mackenzie Phillips was raped by her father, and then went on to conduct an incestuous relationship with him into her adult years. The relationship ended according to Ms Phillips, when she becamepregnant, and aborted a fetus she thought was her father’s. Mackenzie Phillips is the daughter of John Phillips, lead singer of the The Mamas & the Papas, and his first wife, Susan Adams. There was much fallout from this story, not only from the family but from stars like Vivica A. Fox. Ms Fox was quoted on TV as saying, “I just don’t like it. Her father is not here to defend himself.” For some stars the best comment is no comment.

 

Ms Phillips is not the only star/entertainer to report beingabused and a victim of incest. Oprah Winfrey is the illegitimate daughter of a Mississippi sharecropper. Winfrey moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to live with her mother. Beginning at age 9 and for several more years, Winfrey was sexually abused by several different men, including a teenage cousin and her mother’s boyfriend.

Teri Hatcher of the TV show Desperate Housewives was a victim of her uncle she said at the Third Annual Women’s World Award. Cincinnati Bengals since March 4, 2009 NFL player Laveranues Coles reported hisstep-father raped him at gunpoint at nights beginning at age 10 when his mother was at work. In 1992 Coles step-father pleaded guilty and served 3 ½ years of a 9 year sentence according to public records. Eva Ensler the New York writer of theVagina Monologues reported being sexually abused by her Jewish father.

These are well known people in the entertainment world.There are more people in the public eye who are victims – keeping it in the family! Pedophiles breed their own victims.... many little girls are shared as sex mates between older brothers, cousins, uncles, and fathers, and step-fathers. Too many of families are treating their little girls and boys as sex toys. They are mentally, socially, emotionally andphysically abused. Without help andsupport, many incest victims become dysfunctional. Some are forever trapped as part of the Stockholm syndrome.

The Bizarre Case of Marcus Wesson

In March 2004 a 58 year old man was charged with killing  nine children in the family. The children were his by various females, which iswhere the story becomes bizarre. According to the ReligionNewsBlog.com, MarcusWesson is a Seven Day Adventist. The Mercury News stated in the article that Wesson attended Seventh - day Adventist church services over the years. Information was obtained from officials at the Central California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. It seems that only part of the family were formally members of any congregation. It seems Marcus Wesson abused religion by practicing incest, polygamy, physical, mental, sexual abuse and now murder. Family members reported being required to have Bible study three times a day.Mr. Wesson would interpret Scripture for the family resulting in his own gain.Wesson’s been described as a deeply religious and domineering patriarch. This is an example of a person who influencessupporters through a combination of seclusion, sexual programming and his own obsessed preaching. Being a Seventh - day Adventist did not create Wesson into a pervert. You could take Bible passage and distort it enough to preach your own message that allows you to take control of other people.

All of this occurred in Fresno, California where the family lived after being required to move from a tugboat in Santa Cruz Harbor. Prior to living in the Fresno area, the family lived in a cabin in the Santa Cruz Mountains, according to www.mercurynews.com. The article continued that an old neighbor from San Jose remarked Marcus Wesson said that to have more than one wife simultaneously made him a blessed and fortunate man. Among the children killed were 3 - one year olds, 2 – seven year olds, and 1 each 17, 25, 8 and 4 yearsold. The family tree looked something like this but not all children confirmed:

Rosemary Maytorena married Marcus Wesson. It appears she had a daughter, Rosemary  Solorio from another relationship. MarcusWesson had sex with his step-daughter and produced seven children, Marcus’grandchildren. Three of the children were girls – Sofina, Ruby and Rosa. Grandfather Marcus Wesson had sex with the three girls, Sofina, Ruby and Rosa (granddaughters). The incest produced the following: Sofina had son Jonathan (killed); Ruby gave birth to Aviv (killed); and Rosa produced Ethan and Sedona (both killed). They were Marcus’ great-grandchildren. Rosemary Maytorena and Marcus Wesson had at least two children from their marriage – Elizabeth and Adair. Marcus Wesson began having sex with his biological daughter/wife Elizabeth when she was eight years of age according to a TV interview on the Dr. Phil Show. Elizabeth married (?) her father by age 15. AsMarcus’ wife she gave birth to Kiani, Sebhrenah, Dorian, Adrian, Almae, Elizabeth, Serafina, Gypsy, Marcus, Jr. (Marcus’ children or grand-children?)Marcus had sex with his daughters/grand-daughters/wives Kiani and Sebhrenah and stated they were married. Kiani’s incestuous relationship produced Illabella and Jeva (both killed). Sebhrenah and her child  Marshey were both killed by Marcus their father. According to The Mercury News, Mar. 18, 2004 the children in Marcus’ large extended family were kept under tight leash. The submissive women wore dark clothing and scarves.

Marcus Wesson bizarre incestuous relationship confused the family lines of daughter/grand-daughter/wife since he had sex with the females of the family producing off-springs. Elisabeth 42 was locked up by her father Josef Fritzl,73, as an 18-year-old in 1984. He sexually abused her and she gave birth to seven of his children, one of whom died shortly after childbirth and three of whom were brought up by Fritzl and his wife in the family home Reported at guardian.com

The man was out of jail for a year after serving 10 years for repeatedly raping his step-daughter from the time she was 10 years old. He was living with the girl’s mother who was 17 when the relationship started. The 17-year old already had a three-year old daughter of her own, and when the little girl was nine, years old the man began to rape her. He also raped another 16-year old family member in 1996. He went to jail in 1997 and was released in 2007. In 2008 the man followed his disabled daughter home and had sex with her twice. Reported by Sunshinecoastdaily.com

A father made his elder daughter pregnant seven times, fathering two children by her. She bore two other babies but they died the day they were born. He made his younger daughter pregnant 12 times. She has five surviving children. - 24dash.com

Ramli Ali, 47 was charged with rape against his17-year-old daughter at his home in Felda Bukit Batu. According to the charge sheet, the girl was 14-year-old when the incest occurred in July 2006, and it produced a son.- starnews.com

A 51 year old man had 6 children by hisown daughter and abused her for more than 20 years. She was 19 when she gave birth to the first baby. - news.bbc

Michele Mongelli is a man from Turin, Italy,who was arrested on March 27, 2009, for allege incest with his daughter over 25 years. His son Giuseppe was arrested on the allegation of sexually abusing his sister and his own four daughters.

The Everyday Practice of Incest

Incest and sexual abuse of children is very common in American society. Consanguineous (refers to the property of being from the same lineage as another person) unification remains favored in North Africa, the Middle East and large parts of Asia, with marriage between first cousins is particularly accepted. The U.S. is a melting pot of cultures. Incest in certain forms is NOT taboo all over the world. Therefore, when people arrive in the U.S. they bring their cultures and behaviors with them. A protest against this rationalization is that incest-taboo often is applied both to blood-relationships and to in-laws, and that incest is distinctly very diverse in different cultures. In the past the words "blood shame" was used in place of incest to emphasize the biological association between the abuser and the victim. It is unfortunate to see incest only as a genetic problem.

In some families incest is a practice passed from one generation to another, such as Ancient Egypt. The girls and young boys are abused and become the victims. The abuser may have been abused as a child or taught the practice of incest by the adult males. The “mother” may be the daughter, grand-daughter, niece, sister of the abuser. She may know of incest of her children or other members of the family, but be mentally, emotionally and/or physically incapable to do anything. The “mother” may know nothing of incest in the family, and may have married into an incestuous family. The families often move time and again and have little or no acquaintances with any one in community. Families move to isolated areas like mountains or farms in the middle of nowhere. The abuser may give an outward show of being very religious. He may have religious services in the home, justifying his behavior by reading Bible passages. According to Christine Courtois, Healing the Incest Wound: Adult Survivors in Therapy, 1988, child incest victims frequently grows up to have problems of low self-esteem, sexual dysfunction, and difficulties with interpersonal relationships. Some suffer mental illness and substance abuse. Turner, Jeffrey S. (1996). "Encyclopedia of Relationships Across the Lifespan stated that approximately 20 million Americans were victims of incest as children. Most common is father-daughter and stepfather-daughter incest, and the remaining reports consisting of mother/stepmother-daughter/son incest. In countless cases incest is also inbreeding. Inbreeding leads to a higher percentage of congenital birth defects through a raise in the occurrence of homozygotes.

Third-Dirtiest Hotel in America Deals in Child Porn-Desert Inn

Officials charged 58-year-old Dennis Devlin, the hotel's manager and the owner's son. Devlin charged with two counts of sexual performance by a child and one count of principal to lewd and lascivious behavior. Michael Ehmen, 20, of Daytona Beach, faces two counts of promoting child sexual performance and one count of lewd and lascivious behavior on a child. Devlin beat child sex charges two decades ago, police said. He was first convicted of paying a teenage boy for sex, but the charges were dropped when the boy changed his story, investigators said. Several boxes from the hotel, including DVDs that police said they found hidden in the ceiling of Devlin's room that match everything that the 13-year-old victim described happening to him.

Emotional Blackmail: When the People in Your Life Use Fear, Obligation, and Guilt to Manipulate You

Using aggression as a parenting style leads to serious problems for those children and how they will grow up to deal with the adult world. The kids have two choices: they can be a victim, because that’s the role they’ve been assigned in their family, or they can be aggressive/abusive bullies, because that’s what was modeled for them.  We can always say people parent the way they were parented, but that’s not an excuse for not getting skills more suited to this day and age. Talk is cheap. We have to model appropriate behavior if we are to expect it of our children. There’s a lot of talk, activities, organizations and demonstrations. There are also a lot of cases of bullying everyday – all day.

Parents as Bullies:  Anchorage, Alaska Jessica Beagley, the mother of six who was seen punishing her 7-year-old son with hot sauce and cold showers in a video that aired on the “Dr. Phil” show, was charged with child abuse on Friday January 28, 2011. The 36 year old woman’s lawyer’s defense is that the city is intruding into a family matter.  He claims she’s done nothing that would warrant a criminal charge for child abuse. “If this hadn't showed up on 'Dr. Phil,' there wouldn't be anybody saying anything about it.”  Perhaps that’s the problem – no one would have said anything. The woman’s husband, Gary Beagley, is an Anchorage police officer, but he's not under investigation.

So basically, the boy could not be saved from bully abuse given by his mother. The other authority figure in the house, policeman father was no help. The boy and his twin brother were adopted from Russia when they were 5 years old.

For those adults who say their parents used hot sauce to discourage finger sucking, this is no comparison.  Putting hot sauce on a finger that can be redrawn from the mouth by the child is much, much different from a child required to use the hot sauce as mouthwash – swishing for two minutes.

If the child had psychological problems at adoption, having to hold hot sauce in his mouth is not going to help the issues. According to msnbc.com report, the twins were abandoned by their mother at approximately two years of age. They spent at least two more years under state care in Russia before being adopted. We have no idea what experiences the kids endured.

In Gulfcrest, Alabama - Mobile County Deputies arrested Elizabeth Majors November 2010 after WKRG News 5 aired cell phone video of a fight between the woman's daughter and another girl at a school bus stop. Major's daughter is accused of bullying the unidentified girl’s younger brother.  Elizabeth Majors accused of pulling a gun and threatening the school bus driver who was trying to break up the fight.

The right to keep and bear arms is the assertion that people have a personal right to "weapon(s)" for individual use. The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States does not give the right for a mother to pull a gun so her daughter can bully unrestrained.  Just a bully giving birth to a bully. More From the Crime Desk:  A gang of six teens were arrested and charged with kidnapping, unlawful restraint and related offenses for dragging a 13-year-old student through the snow, tossing him in a tree and hanging him by his coat on a metal fence post. Most disturbing, there were other people around including adults who did not intervene nor call 911. The whole bullying abuse was videotaped. The attack occurred in Upper Darby, PA January 2011. Video shows the terrified teen screaming for the boys, aged 13-17, to stop pummeling him.

Realistically today if a group of six male teens are being disruptive, most single adults fear for their safety also.  That does not excuse the fact that no one called police or videotaped the teens for later identification.  So once again, who can the kids depend on for help? Children and Bullying: How Parents and Educators Can Reduce Bullying at School
